Home Heating
Which system to choose?
When winter months draw near and temperatures start dropping if your home doesn’t have some type of heating element, you could be left shivering. Floridians finally get to take out those sweaters we get to wear a few days of the year. Although Florida doesn’t typically see harsh winter weather, when it comes to heating your home, there are two heating methods, mainly heat pumps and straight cool systems. While both work to heat your home, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Traditionally, our area has utilized straight cool systems, but more and more air conditioning experts are recommending for efficiency purposes that homeowners install heat pumps to heat their home during the colder months.
What is a straight cool system?
Straight cool systems are for homeowners that almost never turn their heat on. The system is less expensive up front and is more efficient on the cooling side, but costs more to use in heat mode than a heat pump system. Straight cool systems are air conditioning units with a heat strip. When using the heat on your Air Conditioning unit your costs to run your heat will be higher on your power bill.
What is a heat pump system?
Heat pump systems heat much more efficiently than straight cool systems. A heat pump transfers heat from a colder area to a hotter area by using mechanical energy. Your heat pump works by moving the heat from the air to your home. It does this by using the hot gas from the compressor and a reversing valve that reverses the hot gas from the condenser to the evaporator coil. If you prefer a warmer home, this is your best bet for cooling, as you can save hundreds of dollars per year by heating with a heat pump system as compared to a standard air conditioning system.
Which system is right for me?
The initial price for an air conditioning unit with a heat pump is a little more, many homeowners are choosing a heat pump instead of a straight cool for their new system. For homeowners with new construction homes with more than three units, it’s optimal to go with an air conditioning system with a heat pump because it is more efficient and costs less to install the electrical service, since straight cool systems pull more amps when heating. While a heat pumps initial cost to install is more than a traditional straight cool system, the cost savings may be worthwhile depending on how frequently you use your heat. If you don’t often turn on your heat during the winter, even when the temperature is very cold outside, a straight cool system will work for you just fine.
